NFL Week 1 betting roundup: D'Andre Swift's drop, Lions' choke job ruins $175K wager

Not only was D’Andre Swift’s late-game end zone drop heartbreaking for fans of the Detroit Lions, it was extremely costly for one BetMGM bettor.

With the Lions trailing the Chicago Bears 27-23 with 11 seconds to play, Matthew Stafford delivered a perfect ball to Swift in the front left corner of the end zone. But the rookie running back out of Georgia dropped what would have been the game-winning touchdown.

Swift’s drop left just six seconds on the clock. And after one more incompletion, another Detroit heartbreak was complete.

Had Swift caught that pass and the Lions added the extra point to flip the score to 30-27, it would have yielded a return of $159,090.90 for one BetMGM user who wagered $175,000 on the Lions to cover the 2.5-point spread.

To make matters even worse, all of that happened after the Lions blew a comfortable lead. Detroit was up 23-6 entering the fourth quarter, but allowed much-maligned Bears QB Mitchell Trubisky to engineer a comeback.

Trubisky threw three fourth-quarter touchdown passes, including a 27-yard dime to Anthony Miller that gave his team the lead with 1:54 to play.

Trubisky, who beat out Nick Foles in training camp and kept his starting spot, played poorly early on but managed to get into a groove late. His three touchdowns set the stage for Stafford — and later Swift — to play hero on the Detroit side, but the rookie could not make the clutch play.

That’s just a brutally bad beat.

Sunday’s big winners

• The biggest bet MGM received on Sunday — $525,000 — was on the New England Patriots to cover the seven-point spread at home against the Miami Dolphins. There was some late drama involved as the Dolphins drove into the red zone, but a J.C. Jackson end zone interception of Ryan Fitzpatrick sealed the 10-point victory for New England and a $477.272.70 win for that particular bettor.

• The game with the most action on Sunday was the Dallas Cowboys vs. Los Angeles Rams on Sunday Night Football. The game featured Sunday’s most line movement, too, as the Rams opened at +2.5 but closed as one-point favorites. When the Rams were still underdogs, MGM received a $100,000 moneyline bet on the Rams at +115. And thanks in part to a controversial offensive pass interference call, that bettor took home $115,000.

• $120,000 to win $100,000 on Seattle Seahawks -1 in the second half

• $110,000 to win $100,000 on the Las Vegas Raiders vs. Carolina Panthers over 48

• $100,000 to win $99,090.90 on Cincinnati Bengals vs Los Angeles Chargers under 41

• $100,000 to win $99,090.90 on Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. New Orleans Saints over 48

Early season Browns blues

Compared to last year, the Cleveland Browns entered 2020 with considerably less hype. That did not change things on the scoreboard in Week 1 as the Browns were destroyed 38-6 on the road by the Baltimore Ravens.

That was bad news for one MGM bettor who placed a $110,000 wager on Cleveland to cover the 7.5-point spread. That bet would have yielded $100,000, but it never even came close to happening.

Additionally, that Week 1 performance probably did not generate much confidence for whoever placed a $10,000 wager on the Browns at 35-to-1 to win the Super Bowl. If the Browns do somehow in the Super Bowl, that bettor will win $350,000.

Cardinals-49ers total drama

One MGM bettor had $110,000 on the over 48 in the Arizona Cardinals vs. San Francisco 49ers game. It came down to the wire.

Things weren’t looking good when the 49ers held just a 13-10 lead entering the fourth quarter, but a streak of three consecutive fourth-quarter touchdown drives all of a sudden made the over a real possibility.

Trailing 24-20, the 49ers regained possession with 5:03 to play and quickly advanced into Cardinals territory. On a play from the 21, Jimmy Garoppolo underthrew Kendrick Bourne on a play that could have been the go-ahead touchdown — and cashed the over (with the extra point).

A few plays later, on fourth-and-five, Garoppolo missed Trent Taylor on what should have been a first-down conversion. Instead, the 49ers turned it over on downs, the Cardinals ran out the clock and the total stayed under the 48.

Two missed field goals (52 and 49 yards) from Arizona’s Zane Gonzalez were also tough pills to swallow for over bettors, though he did drill a 56-yarder in his team’s win.

That 56-yard field goal came as time expired in the first half and cut the Cardinals’ deficit to 13-10 — just one point under the first-half total of 24. That spelled a loss for one other MGM bettor, who wagered $110,000 to win $100,000 on the over 24.
