Newsagent's big Lotto tip after lucky winning streak
The Bishop Street Newsagency in Perth has recently seen three separate syndicates hit the jackpot, with each scoring roughly $1 million.
A lucky Aussie newsagent that sold three division one winning Lotto tickets in a span of just weeks has revealed details about its incredible streak. Last week the Bishop Street Newsagency in the Perth suburb of Morley celebrated after two separate syndicates purchased from the shop scored big.
The good fortune continued over the weekend when a third syndicate that has been running for more than 18 years — before owners Tina and Tam even bought the business — pocketed $1 million, The West Australian reports.
In the days since, customers have visited the store in droves with the hope of getting in on the action but the couple’s son and store manager Peter Nguyen has warned it might not be that simple — but has released his number one big tip for lotto hopefuls.
“It was just a fluke that we managed to get two of them,” he said of the double win last week. “We didn’t know at the time but we got the same numbers and we made a new syndicate with 10 shares and so it happens there are two syndicates with the same numbers.”
The first two groups scored $952,380 each thanks to the accidental error — with one of the syndicates made up of just five people taking home almost $200,000 a piece.
The group of regular players paid for a system 11 “right after the time that Lotterywest changed their playslips due to Monday and Wednesday moving to Millionaire Medley,” Nguyen told the publication.
“The old playslips didn’t work so we had to move all the numbers to new playslips but we got the wrong system 11. We got the system 11 that was shared by the five people and we got the same numbers,” he explained.
Lotto winner frantic after losing ticket
However, one of the lucky members almost missed out on their $200k payday when she lost her winning ticket and called the newsagency in tears. After frantically searching for two hours, she rang back.
“And that’s when we [told] her, you have to come to the shop quick because at the same time, a customer has found a ticket on the floor with her name on it,” Nguyen said. “That ticket was worth $198,000 and she left it on the floor for two hours.”

Newsagency manager's tip to hitting the jackpot
Although the successful streak appears to have been spurred on by pure coincidence, the store manager said he does have some advice for those hoping to hit the jackpot — perseverance. The syndicate who scored $1 million in the most recent Saturday Lotto draw have been playing with numbers recommended by a customer “a long time ago”.
“The third game of that syndicate are ridiculously silly numbers,” Nguyen added, explaining punters often want to cancel after discovering they are 10, 11, 12, 13, 41 and 45. “Once you change those numbers, that’s when it wins.”
