A restaurant worker in Victoria has allegedly been fired over an “unprofessional” act that saw them write a “disturbing” message on a chalkboard outside the venue.

Photos of the noticeboard circulated online which encouraged patrons at The Deck, in Shepparton in the state's north, to bet on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and to pick a winner amidst the Russian invasion.

In a statement shared on their Facebook page, management revealed action had been taken against the “inappropriate and thoughtless wording” saying the staff member responsible for the joke no longer worked for them.

The restaurant also asked its patrons not to “take it out on front of house staff” insisting it was “one person’s actions” and “not the people serving your drinks or cooking your food.”

“It has been bought to our attention ... an extremely disturbing and unprofessional action from one staff member. This morning a sandwich board advertising very inappropriate and thoughtless wording was put out on display,” the post on Facebook said.

“The staff member who we will not name, has been sent home and no longer works for us.

“We apologise for his actions. We as a business apologise to have offended anyone. We are and this individual is extremely sorry and appropriate action has taken place.”

People on social media erupt: 'Pathetic and moronic'

Despite the restaurant’s attempt to rectify the move, people have continued to criticise the restaurant online with many threatening to boycott the venue for its "shameful" act.

Social media users argued that one single worker couldn’t have been responsible and restaurant management must have been aware of the sign outside their venue.

“Nice try blaming this on one person when there's a whole team there,” one person wrote on Instagram.

”Pathetic and moronic. Will never step foot back inside this place again. Take a long hard look at yourselves and your behaviour,” another raged on Facebook.

“I’m sorry but management would’ve had to be involved in this, management MAYBE made it up. Since when does a waiter/waitress get all the say in what goes on boards?” a third questioned.

The Deck has been contacted for further comment.
