The little boy was rushed to Waikato Hospital by St John Ambulance where doctors worked to save his life.

New Zealand Police told Yahoo News Australia he died on Monday night.

The new mum had reportedly gone to the toilet when one of the family’s two dogs, a Rottweiler, mauled her baby before attempting to bury him, Stuff reported.

A woman who lived nearby, identified only as Karen, told the publication she had earlier returned the dog to the home after it escaped.

When she delivered the dog to the home, the new mum had proudly displayed her hours-old newborn, Stuff reported.

After hearing an altercation at the home Karen went back to the home to investigate and saw the distraught mum cradling the crying boy who was covered in dirt and blood.

Karen contacted emergency services while consoling the woman and was reportedly devastated after hearing the infant had passed away.
