Dramatic video of teenager's fake kidnapping that sparked amber alert

A teenager has reportedly faked her own kidnapping to avoid having to move away with her mum.

Karol Sanchez, 16, appeared in dramatic security footage being snatched by four men from a sidewalk in New York City and shoved into a car while walking with her mum about 11.30pm (local time) on Monday, US outlet ABC News reported.

On Tuesday the teen, whose disappearance prompted an amber alert, was located safe and unharmed in the Bronx, a NYPD detective announced to Twitter.

Police have since revealed Karol was released from custody later on Tuesday and would not be facing charges.

The reason for her apparent fabricated disappearance was not immediately clear, but police were investigating her mum’s desire to move back to Honduras, in Central America, and how Karol did not want to leave, according to ABC News.

“Her mother wanted to move them back to Honduras, but she (Karol) was adamantly against it,” a police source said.

Police are also investigating whether Karol’s boyfriend was in some way involved in the false kidnapping, the publication said.

A wide-scale search was prompted on Monday evening, with police frantically calling on members of the public to assist in finding the then missing teen.

A video still from CCTV of the moment Karol is apparently kidnapped in New York.

Police shared the dramatic footage of Karol’s mum, 36, yelling and trying to pull her daughter from the grasp of the men.

The mum was not injured and left on the sidewalk as her daughter was driven away.
