Adam Gase on job security after Jets' third rough loss: 'That's something I can't worry about'
New York Jets coach Adam Gase is sitting on perhaps the hottest seat in the league just three weeks into the season.
Their brutal loss on Sunday was the latest embarrassment.
The Jets fell in a blowout 36-7 loss to the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The loss marks the second straight 0-3 start in Gase’s tenure in New York.
While many expect that Gase could be the first coach fired this season, the 42-year-old insists he isn’t worried about that possibility yet.
“I’m going to do what I always do: Come back to work tomorrow and try to get things fixed,” Gase said after the loss, via NJ.com. “I mean, that’s something I can’t worry about. I got to focus on getting our guys right.”
Sam Darnold defends Gase
Sunday’s loss brings Gase’s career record in New York to 7-12. The Jets fell to the Bills by 10 points in their season-opener earlier this month, and fell in a lopsided 31-13 matchup with the 49ers last week — a game where numerous San Francisco stars fell to injury.
Quarterback Sam Darnold has struggled to get the offense going, too.
Darnold threw for just 168 yards and one touchdown on Sunday and had three interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns. He has thrown for just 394 total yards in three games, the fourth-worst in the league, and has the fifth-worst quarterback rating among any starting quarterback.
Though it’s early, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported Sunday morning that the Jets’ front office was paying closer attention to Gase and will be when New York hosts the 0-3 Denver Broncos on Thursday night.
Despite the rising public scrutiny for his job and struggles, Darnold was quick to defend Gase on Sunday.
“For us, he’s been putting in — I truly believe this and the guys in the locker room feel the same way — we’ve been put in great positions to go out there and succeed,” Darnold said, via NJ.com. “And go out there, make plays and execute a game plan that’s put together perfectly for us. It’s just about going out there and executing. That’s it.”
A loss to the Broncos on Thursday is sure to override any defense Gase can generate from his players.
