New twist in mystery of Kim Jong-un’s missing nephew
Kim Jong Un’s nephew is reportedly in CIA custody after disappearing alongside his mum and sister in 2017.
Kim Han Sol is the very wealthy son of the dictator’s half brother Kim Jong-nam, who was murdered with a nerve agent in an airport the same year.
Following his dad’s death, the 25-year-old contacted North Korean resistance movement Free Joseon when he noticed the police that usually guarded his home had been removed, according to The New Yorker.
He met with the group in Taiwan just two days after the assassination before reportedly boarding a plane to Amsterdam to seek asylum.
The publication said Han Sol, his mum and sister never made it to his destination and were allegedly intercepted by CIA agents.
Adrian Hong, a Dutch human-rights lawyer and the leader of Free Joseon, said he sent a team to welcome the family at Schipol airport, but they never came through the gate.
The family are believed to still be in CIA protective custody and may now be living in a third country.
Mr Hong met Han Sol in 2013 after the pair were introduced by a mutual friend.
The 25-year-old was wearing Gucci shoes at the time, according to the publication.
“Never met a kid with so much money. Kim Jong Nam had stashed away a lot of cash during his life,” Mr Hong said, adding that losing Han Sol was one of his biggest career mistakes.
