A teen girl was killed behind the wheel of her car when it collided head-on with a van in a Monday afternoon crash that her puppy miraculously survived.
Sky Heffernan, 17, was travelling down Bulga Road in Wingham, near Taree in NSW, when her Ford Falcon hit a Hiace van driving the opposite direction just before 1.15pm.
Moments earlier a Highway Patrol Officer travelling the opposite direction to Sky spotted her car and executed a U-turn in an attempt to pull her over – the crash occurred before the officer reached her.
The male driver of the van suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to John Hunter Hospital for treatment.
A crime scene was established at the crash site for examination by officers from the Mid North Coast Crash Investigation Unit.
A Critical Incident Investigation Team from Mid North Coast has now commenced an investigation into all circumstances surrounding the crash.
That investigation will be subject to independent review and all information will be provided to the coroner.
A huge number of Sky’s friends have taken to Facebook to share tributes for the “beautiful person” who was just weeks away from turning 18.
“You only just got a new job [and you were] just starting to start your life [and] just got a new puppy that I could see loved you to bits, [it was] always asleep on your chest,” Emilee Cuthbertson wrote.
“You will always be my best friend for life, I’m absolutely shattered, another life lost behind the wheel, forever 17 my angel Skyzie.”
Emilee also shared a photo of a tattoo she had done with Sky’s name, date of birth and the date of her death, writing: “Forever and always”.
Another friend wrote that Sky’s death “doesn’t feel real” and “she never deserved this”.
“RIP Sky you beautiful girl,” someone else said, another writing that Sky was “such a beautiful person”.
