Police have released images of a masked armed robber and his getaway car after he ransacked an Adelaide jewellery store in front of terrified customers.
The jewel thief – wearing a balaclava and armed with a shotgun, hammer and meat cleaver – raided the shop at the Arndale Shopping Centre at Kilkenny about 12.45pm on Sunday before taking off in a grey Ford Territory.
As police continue to hunt for the jewel thief on Monday morning, they have released new information about his getaway car in the hope someone may recognise it.
“The suspect left in a dark grey Ford Territory, SA rego S044BBR, however these number plates are not registered to the suspect vehicle,” SA Police said in a statement.
“The man is described as wearing grey clothing, socks and thongs.”
A few hours earlier a woman was robbed by an armed intruder who stole an iPad, jewellery and cash at a home in nearby Prospect before escaping in a grey car.
Police are investigating whether the robberies are linked.
No one was injured in either incident but some jewellery shop staff members were treated for shock.
Shaken staff and shoppers told how they cowered behind counters as the brazen heist unfolded.
“He was doing things really quickly, looking around, waiting for someone to approach him,” witness Tracy Fullerton told 7 News in the moments after the robbery.
Anyone who sees the car is asked not to approach it as the suspect may be armed and dangerous, but to contact police immediately on Triple Zero (000) or 131 444.
