Neighbour's sweet Christmas surprise: 'Thank you stranger'

Hearts in Melbourne are “melting” after a neighbour’s kind gesture took the spirit of Christmas to a new level.

A man was stunned when he recently returned home to his apartment building to discover a surprise waiting for tenants in the lead up to the festive season. A photograph of an apartment door shows a big red ribbon tied to the front with a Merry Christmas sign to the right of it. But it’s what is underneath that left the internet smiling.

“You are sweet,” a poster stuck to the wall reads. “But still, you deserve some sugar. Daah!! Please have some. Merry Christmas, lovely neighbour.”

On the ground sits a small shelving unit, laden with candy canes and chocolates. While on the bottom shelf, man’s best friend has been remembered with a box full of dog treats.

Alongside the image on Reddit, the author posted a message of gratitude.

“Dear neighbour who left little Christmas presents for all tenants on the floor,” he said. “If you read this, just wanted to say a big thank you for melting my heart and bringing some Christmas magic to our building. You’ve brought me a lot of hope during this murky time and it is so right on time. Thank you, stranger.”

'Top neighbour' celebrated on online

The man's Reddit post has since gone viral, racking up more than 1,000 impressions, with many praising the “lovely gesture”.

“What a great idea, who said the spirit of Christmas was dead?” one person wrote. “So damn cute and wholesome,” said another.

“A little goes a long way, how good!” someone else added. “You have no idea how lucky you are,” another commented. “Top neighbours!”

While others congratulated the generous tenant for also thinking of the four-legged residents. “The dog gifts did it for me, amazing,” someone else added. “Bones for dogs! Ok you have a pretty lovely neighbour,” said another.

But not everyone was happy, with some Reddit users saying the decorations and gifts should be reported to body corporate. “That’s a tripping hazard and could dangerously block an emergency exit during a fire,” one person wrote.

“Also people with allergies may in the worst case die if the ingested ‘free’ food contains nuts or deadly bacterial growth. Also not everyone celebrates Christmas due to beliefs. It is just a reminder of how selfish people can be.”

However, other users were quick to shut down this Grinch. “There’s always one Karen but strata rules are pretty much a democracy so one Karen doesn’t get to make the decisions,” they said.
