A mystery woman may hold the clue to an unsolved fatal hit-and-run in Brisbane's south 12 months ago.

Van Phuc Nguyen, 50, was walking with groceries along Shelduck Street in Inala on May 24 last year when he was hit by what police now believe was a Toyota Hilux.

Mr Nguyen was on the phone with a woman, believed to be 66-year-old Oan Tran, on the night of the accident.

Police say her phone hasn't been used since that night, and despite numerous attempts to locate her they haven't been able to speak to her.

She was in the Laidley area at the time of Mr Nguyen's death and has links to Vietnam.

Senior Sergeant Simon Lammerton says it's hard to believe someone in the community doesn't have information about the incident.

"We're appealing to that person's humanity," Sen Sgt Lammerton said.

Police want to be able to offer closure to Mr Nguyen's family, he said.

"Someone out there knows something, and we are appealing to them to come forward, no matter how small they may think the information is."
