A man has been charged with murder over a stabbing in Victoria's east.

The victim was found at an intersection in Sale, about three hours from Melbourne, at 1am on Sunday.

Police provided first aid as they waited for an ambulance but were unable to save the man's life.

In a statement on Sunday night, police said a 20-year-old Sale man had been charged with murder.

He is due to appear in the Sale Magistrates Court on Monday.
