Police are appealing for help in identifying a mystery driver killed after a stolen SUV left the road before crashing into trees and bursting into flames in Melbourne’s southeast.

Officers believe the Lexus RX450 SUV veered off the road at McClelland Dr in Frankston North shortly after 2am on Sunday.

The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle died at the scene.

Despite extensive inquiries, police have yet to identify the driver.

He is believed to have been a male child or youth, caucasian in appearance, about 166cm tall, and about 50kg in weight.

Police said the vehicle is understood to have been stolen from a property at Patterson Lakes the day before.

On Wednesday, officer issued a further appeal to a driver of a white vehicle seen in the area day and just prior to the crash.

In a statement, police said anyone with information could come forward anonymously.

Anyone with CCTV in the vicinity of the crash, with dashcam footage or any other information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers or call 1800 333 000.
