On Tuesday police in Florence County, South Carolina, said they had found her body behind the Hannah-Salem Fire Department nearly 72.4 km away from where she had been.

'Heartbroken beyond belief'

Ms Wahl's death was confirmed by her mother in a Facebook post on Monday, September 20, saying she was “heartbroken beyond belief”.

"Sheridan was our cherished and loving daughter, sister, niece and friend," Kelly DeArment Wahl wrote.

"She will be missed more than words can ever express."

Last seen on Sunday

Ms Wahl was reportedly last heard from around 1pm on Sunday, September 19, when she was FaceTiming her mother.

She then tried to rent a scooter but was refused service for not wearing shoes and told her mother she was returning home.

Her mother then advised her to stay the night to avoid the 9-hour drive back to Tampa, Florida. However, her family was not able to contact her since this call, with all calls going to voicemail.

Her body was discovered two days later on Tuesday, September 21, around 8:40am behind the Hanna-Salem Fire Department in Pamplico, South Carolina.

The fire station her body was found behind would have been on her route home to Florida.

A memorial GoFundMe page was set up by Ms Wahl’s friend and roommate Elizabeth Echenique, who described her as “a person with a pure heart of gold” who was “always trying to make her friends and family feel loved and accepted”.

“Sheridan was 21 years old with so much going for her. Her mother and father are amazing, loving parents who I know to have always supported Sheridan," Ms Echenique wrote.

“She was an amazing musician and many times would sit down to make music for fun and relaxation alone and with friends. She loved fashion and was very healthy. She was spontaneous and knew how to make you laugh.”

Ms Echenique also wrote that Ms Wahl’s car had been found crashed on Monday and that witnesses reported a white man driving away from the scene. Although that has not yet been confirmed by local police.
