Rapper gunned down in restaurant after girlfriend's Instagram post

An assailant who shot and killed a rapper who was eating with his girlfriend at a restaurant in Los Angeles may have been clued in to his location thanks to an innocent Instagram post.

On Monday, rapper PnB Rock, whose real name is Rakim Allen, was killed at a Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles restaurant in Los Angeles.

At the time he was with his girlfriend who had posted the location and tagged the rapper in an Instagram post that has since been deleted.

Detectives are investigating whether the Instagram post prompted the attack, police chief Michel Moore told the Los Angeles Times on Tuesday.

The assailant approached PnB Rock's table and demanded he hand over his possessions, Los Angeles police said.

This then led to a verbal exchange and the assailant then opened fire and struck PnB Rock multiple times.

Chief Moore said PnB Rock was "brutally attacked by an individual" who came to the location after the Instagram was posted.

"Mr PnB Rock was shot and killed and lost his life there, simply over the jewellery and valuables that he had on his person," Moore said according to CNN.

"Our investigation continues. There was an extensive amount of cameras and investigative leads that we will follow to solve this case."

The assailant fled the scene in a car that was waiting in the car park. The robber did manage to take some items from the victim. Police are still searching for the offender.

No one else was injured in the shooting. Mr Allen was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Friends and musicians "sickened" over shooting

PnB Rock hailed from Philadelphia and was best known for his 2016 hit Selfish and his latest song had just come out on September 2.

His stage name derives from a street corner called Pastorius and Baynton, an area where he grew up in the Philadelphia neighbourhood of Germantown.

Roscoe's Los Angeles paid tribute to PnB Rock on Facebook, saying he was an "incredible artist".

"His passing represents an enormous loss to each and every one of us," the post said.

"Our most heartfelt condolences, thoughts, and prayers go to the Allen family at this difficult time. The safety of our employees and guests is our utmost priority.

Written tributes add to a growing memorial in the parking lot at Roscoes House of Chicken and Waffles where rapper PnB Rock was shot and killed while being robbed inside the restaurant.

Nicki Minaj was among those who paid tribute to PnB Rock on social media, saying he was "incredible" to work with and that the news of his death was sickening.

Rapper Offset asked people to pray for PnB Rock, saying he has a family and children.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy said he was saddened by the "senseless act of gun violence.

"Saddened by the passing of rapper PnB Rock, who died earlier today due to a senseless act of gun violence," he said.

"PnB Rock was a star in the industry. Sending our condolences to his friends and family during this time."
