Murder of Uber Eats driver caught on camera, teen girls charged

WARNING - Graphic content: A video of the moment an Uber Eats driver was held up in an armed carjacking by two women before being thrown from the moving car and killed on the sidewalk has been released on social media.

An ABC news report named the victim as Mohammad Anwar, a 66-year-old Pakistani immigrant who moved to the US in 2014 to provide for his family.

In the horrific video released on Twitter on Sunday, Mr Anwar can be seen with his front car door open, arguing with a female suspect wearing a bright orange jumper.

“This is my car!” he can be heard yelling before the vehicle takes off with Mr Anwar still hanging out of the drivers seat.

As the car speeds off, a loud bang can be heard as it hits a light pole and continues down the road.

Witnesses in the background yell for somebody to call the police as the car screeches and crashes further down the road.

The person filming runs to the crash site where Mr Anwar can be seen lying motionless on the footpath.

Men in uniform, believed to be from the US Navy, can be seen at the crash site outside the Navy Yard Metro Station in Washington DC.

The two alleged suspects climb from the car which has turned on its side, before lingering at the scene. No one appears to check on the lifeless Uber driver on the pavement.

Teen girls charged with murder after 'senseless' act

A Metropolitan police department media release said on March 23 around 4:30pm (local time) first responders arrived at the 1200 block of Van Street in Southeast Washington and found Mr Anwar with life-threatening injuries.

He was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment and pronounced dead shortly after.

A 13-year old girl and 15-year-old girl were arrested and charged with murder, as well as charges of committing an armed carjacking with a taser, according to a police statement.

Mr Anwar’s family released a statement to ABC News describing the crime as “senseless”.

“The family is devastated by this senseless crime. Mohammad Anwar was a father, a grandfather, a husband, a brother, and uncle beloved by many here in the US and in Pakistan.

“He was a hardworking immigrant who came to the US in 2014 to build a better life for himself and his family. The loss for his family is immeasurable.”

A GoFundMe page has been set up so the family can hold a traditional Islamic funeral and assist with the loss of income.

“Words can not describe how our family is feeling currently. Devastation, confusion, shock, anger, heartache, and anguish are just a few that come to mind. We will carry him with us always, but it doesn’t take the pain away of losing him so tragically and so unexpectedly soon,” the GoFundMe page reads.

"He was simply at work yesterday evening, providing for his family, when his life was tragically taken in an appalling act of violence."

The page has raised over $322,000 (A$420,000) for Mr Anwar’s family.
