A murder investigation is under way after a man who was seriously assaulted in Bristol died in hospital, police have said.

Avon and Somerset Police said it was understood the deceased man was stabbed by another man at about 17:40 BST on Stapleton Road in the city's east on Friday.

He was treated in Southmead Hospital but he died later in the evening, the force said.

One man has been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and "arrest attempts are continuing", police said.

Police said extensive searches involving uniformed officers and the National Police Air Service had taken place in the east Bristol area in an attempt to find the suspect.

Stapleton Road remains closed between the train station and Robertson Road while forensics work is carried out.

The force said it was working to reopen the road as soon as possible.

Formal identification of the deceased man is yet to take place and a forensic post-mortem examination will be carried out later, police said.

'Hugely distressing'

Supt Mark Runacres said the force had already reviewed CCTV footage from the scene.

"There is no place for violence on Bristol's streets and we are committed to working with partners around this issue," he added.

"We want the community to understand that we are here to help them.

"We understand such tragic news is hugely distressing and therefore there will be an increased police presence in the area over the coming days with more patrols carried out, not because we're aware of any increased risk, but because we want to make sure you can approach us to raise any concerns."

Social media warning

Supt Runacres said some people were filming in the area and he appealed for anyone with information to come forward to police.

"Out of respect to the family and friends of the man who has sadly died, we'd please ask no insensitive footage is published on social media," he said.

Anyone with information was urged to contact the force on 101 or the Crimestoppers charity.
