A man has been charged with murder after allegedly running down another man with a four-wheel drive in a backyard in the NSW Hunter region.

Police were called to a home at Cessnock in September 2018 and found a 36-year-old man seriously injured in the backyard. He died at the scene.

On Wednesday Joshua Walker Smith, 34, was arrested in Cessnock and charged with murder.

Police will allege Smith drove a Nissan Patrol into the backyard and pinned the man between the car and a shed, causing fatal injuries.

The two men were known to each other, police will also allege.

Smith did not apply for bail when his case was mentioned in Cessnock Local Court on Wednesday.

The case is due to return to the same court on August 12.
