Mum's warning after toddler gets caught in escalator at Sydney Westfield

A Sydney mum has warned parents to be careful after her child's foot became stuck in an escalator at a Westfield shopping centre in Sydney on Monday.

The concerned parent shared two pictures of the frightening scene on Facebook, showing an infant's shoe wedged down the side of the escalator.

Fortunately, it appears the child was able to get out of her shoe after it got stuck.

In one of the photos, two staff from the Westfield were seen wearing face masks and gloves, trying to get the shoe out.

"Today my two-year-old's foot got caught in the escalator at Hornsby Westfield, please be careful," the mum wrote on Facebook.

The pictures triggered a flood of reactions from other parents who were horrified by the close call.

"My absolute worst nightmare," one person said, adding they wished the two-year-old was okay.

The mother said her daughter was okay and "playing happily" after the incident.

Another person said escalators are "so much more risky" than one might think, while many said they had similar experiences when they were younger.

"This happened to me when I was around 5. My foot got stuck and my Mum scooped me up. I can't remember what I was doing or how it happened but I'm so so careful around escalators," one person said.

"I'm glad your little one is ok. Big hugs."

Another person added they had a family member who worked in management at a shopping centre and they saw escalator incidents all the time.

One person questioned whether the shoe got stuck because the child's shoelace got caught on the escalator, however, the mum confirmed the shoes didn't have laces.

There's no shortage of horror stories regarding children on escalators.

In 2019, a toddler got his fingers stuck in an escalator in Malaysia and he remained trapped for about 10 minutes while emergency workers tried to free him.

The same year, a little girl got her hand caught in the handrail of an escalator.
