Mum's warning after dog eats 'fatal' but common ingredient

A mother-of-two has warned of the dangers of having pets in the kitchen while cooking after a “traumatic” experience left her family’s dog seriously ill.

Katy Carroll, from Beacon Hill in Sydney’s Northern Beaches, revealed her horror after her decision to make pizza for her family over the weekend ended in disaster.

After making dough for up to eight pizzas, their eight-month-old Ridgeback, Bailey, stole the raw mix and ate the whole thing.

Ms Carroll said she assumed Bailey would vomit the dough up and appeared fine for several hours. But his condition drastically deteriorated, forcing her husband to rush him to the vets.

“He began to show drunk-like symptoms such as staggering around, not walking properly and very disorientated,” Ms Carroll told Yahoo7 News.

It was only until they made it to Northside Emergency Vets they realised the magnitude of the problem.

“The dough was stuck inside him swelling his stomach up, the yeast ferments in the warm stomach environment and turns to Ethanol hence the drunk symptoms,” Ms Carroll explained.

The vet confirmed Bailey had suffered from alcohol poisoning and a swelling stomach before placing him on a drip while x-raying every few hours to check on his condition and the location of the dough.

The vet informed Ms Carroll’s husband that if they had left Bailey overnight, ingesting the dough could have proven fatal.

At home Ms Carroll’s two young children waited anxiously with “many tears shed waiting for the phone call from the vet”.

Thankfully, Bailey pulled through and was able to come home.

“It was such a relief, he really is the third child in this house!” Ms Carroll admitted.

Despite being on the road to recovery, Ms Carroll has warned other pet owners of the dangers of animals eating raw dough.

“I’d hate anyone to go through the same thing as us, we were worried sick and didn’t realise eating raw dough could be fatal for dogs,” she said.

“I’d like to think our experience could potentially save another dog’s life. We really had no idea pizza dough could be so dangerous!”
