Mum turns son in after discovering sinister secret in journal

The mother of a would-be school shooter has been praised for her courage after she turned her own son into police when she discovered details of a planned attack in one of his journals.

The mum, known only as Nicole, said her 17-year-old son described detonating pipe bombs and using multiple guns to “blast anyone in sight” and “execute survivors” at College Place High School in the US state of Washington.

CBS News reports he also wrote how an attack would unfold on the anniversary of the Columbine High School massacre that took place in Colorado on April 20, 1999, and saw 12 students and one teacher murdered.

Nicole said she called police despite her son saying it was “just a story” and part of a creative writing exercise.

She also recognised the urgent attention her son needed as he had been battling with depression for a lengthy period.

Now that he’s been arrested and is being held in jail, she said both he and the community were safer.

“I'm worried about his mental health and he needs help. Truth hurts sometimes,” she said.

“It takes a lot to do what I did. It wasn't easy.”

Police have since expressed gratitude for the mother’s actions.

“She's very courageous. It's clearly very emotional for her. She loves her son,” College Place police chief Troy Tomaras said.
