Mum-of-three has leg amputated after she's bitten in 'spider-infested' home

WARNING – GRAPHIC CONTENT: A mother-of-three has endured a leg amputation and seven surgeries, after being bitten by a dangerous spider in her apartment.

Kiara Boulton of West Memphis, USA, got out of the shower one day and noticed a bump on her foot from a spider bite.

She later realised that the offending spider was a brown recluse.

According to the Journal of Arachnology, brown recluse spiders are “ubiquitously infamous throughout the world because of their ability to occasionally cause significant skin necrosis”.

A diabetic since the age of 10, Ms Boulton went to the emergency room at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis.

The hospital told her to see her regular doctor, who later prescribed medicine. However, she soon started limping and three days after the bite, her toe turned black.

Doctors initially said that her toe had to be amputated. However, the infection kept spreading and eventually Ms Boulton’s leg was amputated above the knee. Since the bite, she has had seven related surgeries.

Ms Boulton and her three children continue living in the spider-infested apartment. Her apartment managers have not responded to her complaints about the pests. In an effort to protect her children, she catches any spiders she finds in the apartment in a jar.
