Mum's plea to find out how daughter died in Mozambique two years ago

The family of a young Australian woman believed to have been murdered in Mozambique in 2016 has launched a petition asking the federal government to find out who killed her and why.

Elly Warren died in Mozambique, in south-east Africa, two years ago, but her family have not been able to obtain any information from the Mozambique authorities on the exact circumstances of her death.

The 20-year-old’s mother, Nicole Cafarella, has launched a petition on Change.org asking Prime Minister Scott Morrison to help give them “closure”.

“Our 20-year-old daughter Elly Warren was volunteering for a marine conservation program in Tofo, Mozambique,” the petition explains.

“Two years on and we still to this day have little information regarding her death.

“As Elly was an Australian citizen travelling in an overseas country, Australia has no authority to assist or carry out their own investigation into her death.

“Mozambique police refuse to provide Australian authorities with their investigative reports on Elly’s death and refuse to confirm that an investigation is taking place.

“We ask Scott Morrison as Prime Minister of Australia to intervene in this case to put pressure on the Mozambique government to allow Australia to provide an investigation team to work with the Mozambique police to solve Elly’s murder and give her some justice.”

The petition statement describes Elly as a “bright, happy, hard-working, determined young girl with her whole life ahead of her”.

“Elly loved travelling, she loved Africa, the African people and marine life, and wanted to make a difference in marine and wildlife conservation,” the petition states.

“Elly’s extended family and friends still find it hard to accept she is gone.”
