'BABY IN THE BED!': Mum gives birth to son while fast asleep
A mum of two and her husband are still reeling in shock after they woke from a nap to discover their newborn son had decided to deliver himself.
Laura Thompson, a teacher from Dallas, Texas, was admitted to hospital on October 9, a week earlier than she was due to give birth, so nurses could induce her labour.
The 31-year-old had been placed on bed rest after she began suffering contractions following a car crash on October 1 when a driver had ran a red light and slammed into her car.
Ms Thompson told Yahoo News Australia she was induced at 6am and received an epidural around 12pm, but the labour “took forever to progress”.
By 9pm, she said she had lost feeling in her left leg but was only dilated six centimetres so no one was worried about her giving birth any time soon.
Upon hospital staff’s advice, the couple fell asleep around 10pm, only to be awoken 20 minutes later by a nurse screaming “baby in the bed!” Ms Thompson said.
The mum of two had given birth to her youngest son, named Jones, or Jonesy, while fast asleep.
“Our awesome nurse came in to check on us and move me around because Jonesy had slipped off the heart monitor, which he had done several times,” she said.
“She woke me up, moved the blanket to move the peanut ball I was using, and yelled “BABY IN THE BED!” and called for a code blue.
“Jonesy was laying on my numb leg.”
The 31-year-old said her husband, Nathan Thompson, 34, had been snoring when the nurse came into the room, but was quickly up, next to her and in “a total panic”.
“I honestly laughed when I saw him. I had felt him moving for so long that I just knew he was strong and okay. It was a surreal moment,” she said.
“I honestly wouldn’t believe it happened if it hadn’t happened to us.”
Ms Thompson told Yahoo News Australia she had felt some pressure off and on, but not the constant pressure needed to push.
“My pressure was inconsistent and not enough to keep me from sleeping. It’s part of why we all expected Jones to need more time before he would be born,” she said.
The teacher said her nurse repeated that she was “shook” and confessed she had never seen a baby deliver itself in her three years working in labour and delivery.
She said Jones is doing well and is “surprisingly calm for a baby who didn’t wait to be delivered.”
“Jonesy is our proof that 2020 isn’t all bad. He’s a pretty awesome little person,” the mum beamed.
