A group of New Zealand mums has sparked a furious debate online after claiming they are fed up with seeing tiny g-string bikinis litter local swimming spots.

Kayla Edwards started the debate after sharing on social media she felt uncomfortable taking her family to a popular swimming spot in Taupō, New Zealand, because of people wearing what she labelled as ‘inappropriate’ swimwear.

What she didn’t expect was the influx of negative backlash the post received, with plenty of people slamming her comments as “jealous”, even calling her a “prude”.

“I actually expected that most people would agree … and maybe we could actually get a sign?” she told NZME.

Another local mum agreed with Kayla saying, “I’ve seen men in mankinis, women walking around in G-string bikinis and even the odd naked person getting changed in public. It’s disgusting and it has to stop.”

But there were plenty of other people that had no issue with it.

“As long as private bits were covered, what does it matter?” another Taupō resident Bonnie also told the publication.

The last 12 months definitely saw the emergence - or reemergence - of very eye-popping bikini styles.

Swimwear is not only getting tinier and tinier by the season, but some of the looks circulating on social media have left us downright gobsmacked.

From the barely-there sting-kini we saw Aussie influencer Tammy Hembrow before summer even officially kicked off, to wedgie fronts that look painfully high, and bikinis that are purposely purchased two sizes too small.
