A young girl and her mother have been identified as alleged victims of a fatal double stabbing in Melbourne’s northeast.

The girl, 6, and the 39-year-old woman were both found with critical injuries at a home in Mill Park about 7.50pm on Thursday. They died from their injuries.

The two victims were named as Poonam Sharma and her daughter, Vanessa, by several news outlets.

Detective Inspector Dean Thomas told reporters on Friday a 40-year-old man injured himself while speaking with police and was in a critical condition in hospital under police guard.

Det Insp Thomas said the man was known to police and no one else was wanted in relation to the incident.

He was named as Prabhal Sharma, Ms Sharma’s husband and Vanessa’s dad, by multiple news outlets. Mr Sharma is yet to be charged with an offence.

Det Insp Thomas said authorities were awaiting further medical advice, but expect the man may survive his injuries. He will be interviewed in the coming days if medically cleared.

A 10-year-old girl, named as Vanessa’s sister Angela, managed to escape the scene uninjured.

"It's very difficult for her. She's been through an absolutely terrible, traumatic incident... we want to make sure she's as good as she can be,” Det Insp Thomas said.

Horrific details of the Mill Park scene emerge

Det Insp Thomas said it was believed Ms Sharma ran to a nearby home for help as evidenced by blood on the door and the pavement.

“And of course, she’s been pursued by the offender,” he alleged.

Det Insp Thomas said emergency services were called to the home on Thursday about 12.50pm.

"We believe that a person at the address was assessed at that point in time and emergency services cleared," he said.

The homicide squad has been called in to investigate the incident.

A neighbour told 7News she heard a man screaming.

“He told whoever it was that he loved the person, like I love you and then just screaming out of frustration,” she said.

Another neighbour, named as Ali Hussain, told 7News he saw a woman bleeding from the neck.

He added at first his mum thought the woman was wearing a red dress, but soon realised she was covered in blood.
