Mr & Mrs Smith spoilers follow.
Mr & Mrs Smith co-creator Francesca Sloane has addressed the possibility of a second season following the big cliffhanger.
The Prime Video series sees Donald Glover and Maya Erskine play the titular characters, a married couple who both happen to be highly skilled assassins.
The final episode concluded on an open-ended note as the married couple’s fate was left unknown, but Sloane teased to Entertainment Weekly that it might not be the end for the pair.
“I think that there's definitely a lot more story to tell here,” said Sloane, who created the show alongside Glover. “I think that we definitely feel like this is a fully satisfied story if it were to just live on its own. But it definitely has more legs to keep going, that's for sure.
“The entire season is attempting to subvert the genre while still being really satisfying to people who love the movie, and I think [they] will be incredibly pleased with the way that our finale wraps up. I feel like we've really earned the finale in terms of its gloriousness.
“I also feel like people who have never even heard of the original IP will watch that and feel like it is a well-rounded, exciting, shoot-'em-up romance with a really interesting ending – it’s something that will have a lot of people talking.”
In addition to Glover and Erskine, the series boasts a stacked roster of guest stars, with Sarah Paulson, Paul Dano, Sharon Horgan, Alexander Skarsgård, Eiza González, John Turturro and Ron Perlman all making appearances.
The show has received positive reviews thus far, with several critics praising the reinvention of the original story and the lead duo’s performances as it garnered a healthy 87% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
