A motorway was blocked this afternoon after a trailer carrying what appear to be large fridges spilled its load.

Traffic was stopped on the M5 northbound near Junction 11 in Gloucestershire, sparking delays of up to 45 minutes and six miles of congestion.

The debris was moved to allow one lane of traffic to flow, with National Highways South West confirming recovery had been arranged.

Pictures from the scene show a large 4x4 with a trailer that appears to have disintegrated, with debris scattered across the carriageway.

A broken up trailer can be seen having scattered white goods and what appear to be building materials. The trailer is attached to a dark-coloured 4x4 vehicle and in the background two police cars are visible with their blue lights on.
