A major road has been closed in both directions after a serious collision.

The M49 has been closed by police between the M5 (J18) and the M4 (J22), north of Bristol.

Police said the crash involved two lorries and a car, with emergency services called just after 16:00 BST.

Three people have been taken to hospital, and the road is expected to remain closed for investigation work for some time.

Diverted traffic heading northbound is advised to use the M5 and M4, while southbound traffic is advised to continue eastbound on the M4 until J20 (Almondsbury Interchange), then take the M5 southbound.

Avon and Somerset Police have asked anyone with information or dashcam footage to get in touch.
