'I hate you': Mum's scathing message to man who dismembered her daughter
A man who was convicted of killing and dismembering a woman was sentenced to at least 100 years in prison, and the victim’s mother had a scathing message for him.
Ashley Young’s torso was found in December in the basement of Jared Chance’s rental home in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Ms Young’s other remains have not been found.
The victim’s mother, Kristine Young, yelled at Chance in the courtroom while clutching her daughter’s cremated remains.
“You threw her out like trash,” she shouted at him.
“Jared Chance, I hate you. I want to rip you limb from limb and discard you, just like you did to Ashley. ... You threw her out like trash and she was your friend. Why?” Kristine Young said during her victim statement.
She then held up her daughter’s remains and said, “If I want a hug, I have to hug a box.”
Chance and Ms Young knew each other, according to AP News.
The 30-year-old decided to go to trial last month instead of taking a plea deal. Last month, he was found guilty of second-degree murder and other crimes. If he had taken the plea deal, Chance would have been eligible for parole after 31 years, instead he was sentenced to at least 100 years in prison.
The 100-year minimum sentence exceeded the state guidelines and will be appealed, however the Kent County Judge Mark Trusock said the state’s guidelines did not take into account the brutality of the murder.
“I believe you are evil,” Judge Trusock said before handing down the sentence, according to Fox 17.
“You are clearly a monster without any conscious whatsoever.”
Chance did not speak in court.
His attorney, Andrew Rodenhouse argued during trial no one really knew how Ms Young died.
Police alleged Chance told a neighbour he knew how to commit murder and “get away with it”.
Chance’s parents were both charged with perjury and accessories after the fact. Chance’s father is reportedly a retired police officer.
