Mother-in-law threatens to cut family from her will over son's wedding

Wedding planning is known to be tricky, especially when it comes to finalising the all important guest list.

And for one bride-to-be things have gone really sour as her future mother-in-law kicks up the ultimate fuss about certain family members being invited.

The anonymous woman turned to the internet for advice after her soon-to-be mother-in-law threatened to avoid the wedding and cut her son from her will over the guest list.

“Dp (darling partner) and I have been together six years and planning on getting married next year. It’s a small thing and we have invited the people we want only instead of inviting every single person out of obligation and this includes extended family members,” she posted to the parenting forum Mumsnet.

She continued: “My dp has not invited one of his uncles (his mums brother) for several reasons: he hasn’t seen or spoke to him in over 10 years and he doesn’t like him, any memory of him has been extremely negative and my dp’s dad also really dislikes the uncle.

“My dp has been told if the uncle isn’t invited then mil (mother-in-law) is not going (there’s also the possibility dp will be cut out of the will if he doesn’t).”

Explaining further, she added: “For comparison I haven’t invited one of my uncles for the same reasons and my family have respected my choice with no fall outs.

“We do not have a good relationship in the first place with mil (could write a book about that) and we aren’t bothered if she doesn’t come. Obviously dp would like his mum to be there but his dad has said he’s going and thats enough.

She concluded: “We understand the loyalty she has to her brother and that extends to missing her sons wedding. Are we being unreasonable for not inviting him?”

Many on the forum shared their thoughts on the matter and agreed that it is up to the couple to decide who is invited along to their big day.

Many users on Mumsnet argued that the couple should not give in to the mother’s threats. Photo: Getty

One user wrote: “Unless she’s paying for the whole thing, you are not being unreasonable. My FIL pulled a similar stunt. He wasn’t missed. He pulled it and it worked when my sister-in-law got married, he did it again over her son’s name, 40th party etc.”

While another added: “Not at all unreasonable. Her loss if she chooses to be so petty and miss her son’s wedding.”

One commented: “I don’t think you are. It’s your wedding, invite who you want.”

Give in

While some argued it might be best just to invite the uncle along in order to avoid family drama.

I really think if someone says they are going to write you out of their will over something like this then they are going to find any reason to write you out of it! You can’t be held over a barrel with regard to a will, that’s just the ultimate manipulation,” wrote one user.
