Mortar blast kills nine Afghan children

At least nine children have been killed in an explosion in Afghanistan's eastern province of Nangarhar, a local official says.

Another four children were wounded when a mortar shell exploded near a school in Baiganan village in the Lal Pur district of the province, the provincial governor's spokesperson Qazi Mullah Adel told dpa on Monday.

Images shared in social media showed a damaged popcorn stand close to the site of the incident.

A statement issued by the office of the governor said the blast had occurred after the popcorn stand hit a mortar shell, without providing further information.

The wounded children were taken to the regional hospital in Jalalabad for treatment, the statement added.

Unexploded ordnance left from decades of war in the country often causes casualties among children in Afghanistan.
