UPDATE: SMRT said in a tweet at 11.36am that train services along the TEL have resumed.

SINGAPORE — Peak-hour train services along the entire Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) were disrupted in both directions on Wednesday morning (6 July).

SMRT Corporation had said in a tweet at about 8.25am that a signal fault was reported at Woodlands North station, and trains were moving slower between Woodlands North and Caldecott stations in both directions.

It posted another tweet at about 8.40am that there is no train service between the stations, and free regular buses and bridging bus services were made available.

At around 9.20am, SMRT released a statement on its Facebook page saying, "At around 8.05am this morning, a signalling fault occurred along the Thomson-East Coast Line affecting train service in both directions throughout the line. There is currently no service in both directions.

"Commuters on-board the six stalled trains were safely disembarked at their nearest stations. There was full lighting and ventilation in the stalled train while the commuters were on-board.

"Our engineers have been deployed to rectify the issue. Free regular and bridging bus services have been activated as an alternative for commuters. Additional staff have been deployed to assist with crowd management.

"We are sorry to have affected commuters' peak-hour journeys."

Third signal fault in recent months

According to The Straits Times, this is the third signal fault on the TEL in recent months.

On 23 April morning, commuters were stuck in a stalled train between Woodlands and Woodlands South stations for more than an hour and a half. On 19 May, a signal fault caused trains to move slower in both directions across the entire TEL.

The TEL is the newest train line in Singapore, with the first stage between Woodlands North and Woodlands South opening in January 2020 and the second stage between Springleaf and Caldecott opening in August 2021.
