More human remains found at tourist spot
Another possible human bone has been found in the search of a Far North Queensland tourist spot, where a woman was swept away in fast waters early this year.
Queensland Police are now waiting for scientific testing to determine if further bones found by police divers on Tuesday match a human tibia found at Mossman Gorge last week.
The first of the human remains were found by a member of the public at Mossman Gorge, about 20km north of Port Douglas, on August 22.
Police are investigating whether the bones are a match for a Victorian woman who disappeared while in the water at the gorge in January.
A 10-day search of the area failed to find her.
On Friday, police said the search for further remains had ended.
Officer-in-charge of Mossman Police Station Matthew Smith said the bone had been found downstream from the popular swimming spot where the woman was last seen.
“We’ve found nothing more today. It’s a waiting game now to see if there’s a DNA match with a family member,” Sgt Smith said on Friday, The Cairns Post reported.
It’s not known how long the DNA testing will take.
Mossman Gorge has remained open to the public.
Mossman Gorge is considered the gateway to the Daintree National Park, and is about 78km northwest of Cairns.
