A cannibalistic alligator has been caught on camera chomping down on a rival reptile in the United States.

Taylor Soper's father filmed the horrifying moment the monster-sized predator rose up from under the water and viciously grabbed its smaller victim in its powerful jaws.

It can be seen furiously shaking the smaller alligator around before devouring it whole in one huge gut-wrenching gulp.

The insane footage was shared on Twitter by Mr Soper who said the vicious attack unfolded in his parent’s backyard.

“This happened in my parents (sic) backyard today… The snack is a 6ft gator. My dad captures some good stuff all credit to him but he doesn’t have social media,” he wrote on Friday (local time).

Comments about the video flooded social media, with one user adding the Jurassic Park theme song to the clip.

“That’s a dinosaur,” another person said.

Others described the footage as “crazy” and “scary”.

Many admitted they would move if they witnessed such a scene.

“If I witnessed that in my backyard, the house would be up for sale the next day,” one person wrote.

Another said: “While he’s eating I would be packing my bags moving.”

Some began guessing the size of the two alligators.

“That is a MONSTER. At least 12 feet. Judging from the size of its head maybe even 15,” one person estimated.

Others were shocked that alligators eat their own, while some debated whether the cannibalistic creature was actually a crocodile.

“I think it’s a crocodile since they bigger than gators and they are more aggressive,” a Twitter user said.
