Two people were killed and several injured when a Subaru launched onto a New York pavement after it was T-boned by a BMW in a freak accident.

The crash happened on Wednesday at around 4am in New York City on the intersection of West 207th Street and Sherman Avenue.

In footage of the crash, a Subaru is seen travelling through the intersection, as is the white BMW.

The two vehicles collided in the middle of the intersection and the impact sent the Subaru flying onto the pavement where it struck two pedestrians.

Five other people were injured in the crash, the New York Post reported.

Residents in the area say the intersection has always been a problem, with one person telling WABC TV the area needs speed bumps.

"All this could be avoided," they said, while another person labelled the street a "death trap".

New York Police Department is investigating the crash, however, no charges have been filed. One car allegedly sped through a red light at the intersection, WABC reported.

Victims loved by their community

The pedestrians have been identified as Joel Adames, 31, and David Fernandez, 40. Both were pronounced dead at the hospital.

Mr Adames was reportedly well-loved within the community and was about to celebrate his daughter's second birthday.

He was friends with musician Cardi B, who paid tribute to him on social media and expressed her anger for the crash.

"Stupidness, negligence, I hope the worst to who committed this!" she wrote on social media according to the Daily Mail.

"Took someone sooo loved, full of life and just all around amazing leaving people destroy [sic]."

One of Mr Adames' relatives described him as the "love of the family".

Mr Fernandez worked as a barber and was remembered for his love of dancing.

His cousin said he was the kind of person who would keep his business open for you if you called him at 2am, PIX11 reported.

“He was just an amazing person,” Jolemy Clasé, a friend of Mr Fernandez told PIX11.

“The community loved him.”
