Moment man 'injects drugs' in front of little boy outside safe-injecting rooms

A concerned Melbourne mum has shared photos she claims are of a man injecting drugs in front of a child he was minding near a safe-injecting room.

The woman, known as Sonia, shared pictures with 3AW she claims were taken near the safe-injecting rooms in North Richmond.

She told the station she was “horrified” by what she saw on the corner of Lennox and Elizabeth streets.

Sonia claims the man was walking with a boy by his side and carrying a brown paper bag.

“He just kneeled down with the child standing there and he opened up his package. He injected himself while the child was standing there,” Sonia told 3AW.

“The little child didn’t seem like he was bothered by it, it’s probably just his everyday.”

Sonia added she’s seen drug-affected adults with children in the area before sometimes while children wait in the car.

The centre opened last year, much to the concern of residents, 7News reported.

It is Victoria’s first safe-injecting centre.

But many claimed not all drug users chose to use the facility.

“I think it’s situated in the wrong place,” one man who chose to remain anonymous told 7News.

“It’s in the middle of a school district.”

Sonia told 3AW she wants more support for people using the facility along with their children.

Victoria Police Yarra Local Area Commander Inspector Anne Rudd told Yahoo News Australia in a statement police had not received a report about the incident.

“In the instance police are made aware of a significant risk posed to a child, this matter is immediately reported to the Department of Health and Human Services and Child Protection for intervention,” Cmdr Insp Rudd said.

“Ensuring the safety of the community is a key priority for police, and we will continue to work with the Department of Health and Human Services to ensure this is the case.

“Local police continue to proactively patrol the area and target crime and anti-social behaviour to ensure the community of Yarra is safe. We continually have dedicated operations, and both covert and overt resources working to detect and disrupt crime in order to keep the community safe.”
