Police have charged a Windsor, Ont., mother with criminal negligence causing death and failure to provide the necessaries of life after her five-year-old child drowned.

It happened Sept. 9, in a south Windsor backyard swimming pool, on Barton Crescent near Holburn Street, police say.

When officers arrived they "quickly recovered the child from the bottom of the home's backyard pool," police previously said.

According to authorities, emergency services performed life-saving measures on the unresponsive child; however, they were pronounced dead at hospital.

The child's 25-year-old mother was arrested and charged Sept. 19.
