MLS postpones Sunday's Colorado-Kansas City match after Rapids player tests positive for COVID-19

Sunday’s MLS game between the Colorado Rapids and Sporting Kansas City has been postponed after an undisclosed Rapids player and three team staff members tested positive for COVID-19, the illness caused by the novel coronavirus.

MLS made the announcement on Saturday. A make-up date for the contest will be revealed at a later date, the league said.

“One player and three staff members of the Colorado Rapids received confirmed positive tests for COVID-19 during a series of tests conducted on Thursday and Friday,” the statement read, adding that the rest of the Rapids’ roster remains asymptomatic and have received negative test results for COVID-19. “Based on the number of positive test results, Major League Soccer has postponed the match to allow for additional testing and evaluation.”

The news dropped just 15 minutes after another MLS side, FC Cincinnati, announced that one of its players had tested positive for the coronavirus for the first time. “As a result of this confirmed positive test, the club will now begin daily testing of all close contacts within the first team and soccer staff,” FCC said in a press release. “In addition, the team has implemented contact tracing in conjunction with Hamilton and Clermont County health officials.”

As of this writing, Cincinnati’s match against New York City FC on Saturday night was scheduled to go ahead as scheduled.
