Missing man's body found face down in Brisbane River

A body found face down in the Brisbane river has been identified as a man who was reported missing in Queensland over the weekend.

Matt Jarvis, from Toowoomba, was reported missing on Saturday about 7.45pm after he was seen by friends to enter the Brisbane River in the vicinity of the Lower River Terrace at the bottom of Kangaroo Points cliffs.

The 34-year-old was with a group who had been socialising and drinking near the river.

“He walked off from the group to the river’s edge … they then heard a rustling in the trees and a splash and called out, ‘I think that’s Matt’, a police spokeswoman told AAP on Sunday.

Mr Jarvis’s friends ran to the water’s edge at the popular barbecue spot, where he was seen struggling before three of the group dived in to try and reach him.

A search was commenced by air, water and land over two days.

Officers also investigated whether he made his own way out and called hospitals, friends and family in the hopes of finding him.

On Monday the 34-year-old’s body was found face down in the river about 9.40am.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
