Drunken man killed after climbing into garbage bin, court told

A missing man died after he drunkenly climbed into a garbage bin during a night out, an inquest has heard.

Corrie McKeague, 23, went missing in Bury St Edmunds, in England’s east, on September 24, 2016. He’s yet to be found.

However, an inquest on Friday (local time) concluded Mr McKeague had died the morning he disappeared, the BBC reported.

Chief Superintendent Marina Ericson from Suffolk Police told the inquest Mr McKeague was seen about 3.25am walking “very drunk” behind stores near where industrial waste bins are kept.

She said witnesses told police that Mr McKeague was intoxicated and asked to leave a nearby nightclub.

A garbage truck drove into the area less than an hour later.

Chief Supt Ericson added police believe Mr McKeague fell into one of the bins and was taken away by a truck. She added his phone showed the same route as the garbage truck.

That truck eventually arrived at Milton landfill. Police have searched the landfill but never found his body.

Police said the landfill size is 71.2 hectares with the area where Mr McKeague was believed to be dumped 14 hectares.

Mr McKeague’s dad Martin said after the inquest he believes his son did die after falling into a bin, according to The Guardian.

“The facts and evidence that we’ve been presented with tell us that’s what happened to him,” he said.

A pre-inquest review hearing is due on February 5.
