'Miracle': Australian shepherd mix born with six legs

A border collie and Australian shepherd mix dog has been born with six legs.

The adorable puppy, named Skipper, was born alongside eight brothers and sisters on February 16 in the US state Oklahoma as the state shivered through a deadly snowstorm.

After the storm, her owners rushed her to Neel Veterinary Hospital to be examined.

“This is a miracle named Skipper. Literally,” the vet hospital posted on Facebook with a picture of the dog.

“She has survived longer than we suspect any other canine has (at just 4 days old - published research does not indicate one has been born alive) with her combination of congenital conditions. You might notice she looks a little different - 6 legs!”

Skipper suffers from a type of congenital conjoining disorder, which means she has one head and chest cavity, but two pelvic regions, two urinary tracts, two reproductive systems, two tails and six legs, the vet hospital said.

Miracle dog likely had a twin

Owner of Neel Veterinary Hospital, Dr Tina Neel, told CNN Skipper was likely a twin in utero but they didn’t fully seperate.

After a week, the dog is thriving and is “very strong”, she said.

“She nurses well and is growing appropriately so far. All of her legs move and respond to stimulus just like a normal puppy,” the hospital said on Facebook.

“It's possible she may need physical therapy and assistance with mobility as she gets older.

"We will continue to research her conditions, monitor her development during rechecks and help keep Skipper pain-free and comfortable for the rest of life.”

Skipper is now at home with her family, who have created a GoFundMe to help with her medical bills.
