Ministers face Lib challenge for Vic seats

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg and cabinet colleague Greg Hunt are among a dozen federal MPs having to face an early possible challenge to their preselection.

The Victorian division of the Liberal party has opened applications for endorsement in seats currently held by Liberal MPs, including Mr Frydenberg and Mr Hunt.

The application process, taking place just eight months after a federal election, came despite criticism from within the party that it is way too early to be making such decisions.

There are 12 sitting federal Liberal MPs in Victoria, the longest-serving of whom is former minister Kevin Andrews who was first elected in 1991.

The next federal election is not expected to be held until the first half of 2022.
