Mind the gap: Shocking video shows cyclist disappearing into gap of rising bridge

A cyclist who ignored warnings and weaved past gates blocking access to a bridge has fallen into the gap created when the structure started to rise.

Incredibly, she managed to escape serious injury.

Surveillance video recorded on July 4 shows the woman ignoring the barrier and red flashing lights at the bridge, apparently not noticing that the mechanism was already cranking into action.

She rides through the lowered barriers while the bridge is being pulled up, before the woman and her bike drop into the gap and she disappears under the bridge.

In the following minutes, onlookers in Menasha, eastern Wisconsin, US, can be seen rushing to the cyclist’s aid. The operator stalls the bridge until the woman and her bicycle are extracted.

Police said the 37-year-old woman was taken to a hospital in Neenah where she was treated for facial injuries.

She has been fined for failing to obey the stop signal, The Telegraph reported.
