Mike Trout leaves Angels for birth of first child

Mike Trout expressed concern about playing baseball amid the COVID-19 pandemic with his wife expecting their first child.

The three-time MVP ultimately decided to join his Los Angeles Angels teammates, but he’s taking a break with a baby on the way. The Angels placed Trout on the paternity list on Thursday with his wife Jessica due to give birth to a boy on Monday.

Brian Goodwin will take Trout’s place in center field while he’s gone.

Trout initially wasn’t sure about joining his team in June because of the pandemic.

“Honestly, I still don't feel that comfortable,” Trout told reporters July 3. “It's gonna be tough. I've got to be really cautious these next couple weeks. I don't want to test positive. I don't want to bring it back to my wife. It's a tough situation we're in.”

‘Gotta go see my newborn’

He announced on July 22 his intent to play. But he made clear he wasn’t missing the birth of his first child.

“They’ll be testing every day, but I don’t know the requirements of if I have to quarantine or not,” Trout said. “But obviously I gotta go see my newborn, my first one.”

How long Trout will be out remains unclear. The Angels are playing the Seattle Mariners on Thursday with a weekend slate against the Houston Astros on the schedule.

Through six games, Trout is hitting .292 with a home run and four RBIs.
