Ex-military fighter aircraft crashes in Sydney's Bankstown Airport

An ex-military fighter aircraft has crash landed in Sydney’s west.

Fire and Rescue NSW confirmed the plane had crash landed on the runway at Bankstown Airport about 3.30pm.

A male pilot, 51, and female passenger, 28, were on the plane at the time.

Both got out of the wreckage soon after the plane crash landed, a spokeswoman said.

"The plane has gone off [the runway] onto a grass verge," she said.

"We've put a layer of foam over the fuel [on the runway] and are looking at decanting the fuel from the plane."

She said it was unclear whether the plane was taking off or landing when it crashed.

The jet is a L39 Albatross (Czech) VH-KVZ, a 1976 fighter trainer.

A NSW Police spokeswoman said the plane "ran into problems and failed to take off".

It’s believed the aircraft was used for joy flights in the area however this report is unconfirmed.

No one was injured in the crash.

A spokeswoman for Bankstown Airport said they could not comment at this time.
