Parents horrified to find metal shards in bread eaten by toddler
A Perth bakery has recalled bread from supermarket shelves after metal was found in slices eaten by a toddler.
Eighteen-month-old Sergio Derada was eating a sandwich on Tuesday, made with Mias Bakery bread, when his mum noticed him chewing on a metal wire.
The toddler’s dad, Brad, said as soon he realised what was happening Sergio was rushed to the doctor.
Sergio’s parents then checked the slices of bread and found metal lodged in it.
“At the time it was really – ‘does he have more wire? Has he ingested some?’” Mr Derada said.
“And also, our two other children, who were at school, had sandwiches from the same loaf.”
Sergio is OK. The parents called the bakery and were given an apology in person. They were also given free bread.
A recall appeared in the paper and online on Thursday.

City of Canning health inspectors are now investigating Mias Bakery for a safety breach and could be fined $500,000.
Possibly affected loaves have been pulled from shelves.
Mias Bakery owner Bovells said it “takes the health of its customers as top priority and relies on the latest metal detection equipment” to keep consumers safe.
