Meryl Streep Took Drastic Measures to Escape LA Wildfires After Getting Trapped
As containment and recovery from the wildfires in Southern California continue, many celebrities have shared harrowing stories about how they escaped the fires.
Now, Meryl Streep's nephew Abe Streep revealed the drastic action that the Oscar-winning actress had to take in order to leave her property after the area received an evacuation order at the start of January.
Abe wrote about his family's experience in a piece for New York Magazine, recounting the dangerous situation that Streep faced: "Evacuation mandates were sent across the city. My aunt Meryl Streep received an order to evacuate on January 8, but when she tried to leave, she discovered that a large tree had fallen over in her driveway, blocking her only exit."
In order to leave, Streep allegedly "borrowed wire cutters from a neighbor, cut a car-size hole in the fence she shared with the neighbors on the other side, and drove through their yard to escape," as she was "determined to make it out."
Abe also wrote about other residents impacted by the wildfires, including a man named Jeff Lipsky, a photographer whose family's house managed to survive the fire. He reflected on the destruction as he said, "I don’t ever want to see my house again. It’s a toxic-waste dump...My community is gone. It’s just a curse that my house is there.”
Streep's home reportedly survived the fire, as did her co-star Martin Short's house. Abe spoke with the Only Murders in the Building actor as well, with Short declaring his intentions for the future as he said, “I will definitely stay in my home.” Unfortunately, the home of one of his sons was destroyed by the wildfires.
