Menulog driver's warning after copping $231 fine: 'Feels so wrong'

A man visiting Melbourne was shocked to have copped a $231 fine by what locals are calling one of the most controversial speed cameras in Victoria.

Fuming over the incident, he posted a picture of his fine and loss of one demerit point online to warn people of the supposedly problematic camera.

"Watch out for this 40kmh speeding fine trap on Warrigal Road," he wrote, having allegedly driven 45km/h past it.

"Just feels so wrong."

Speaking to Yahoo News Australia, the driver said he copped the fine while "on my way to start a Menulog delivery shift ... it was an area I am not that familiar with.

"I must have seen the 40km/h [speed limit sign] and slowed down but not enough," he said.

"Technically I was doing the wrong thing but I feel as if this punishment is harsh."

The driver said he had never received a speeding fine before and planned to write to authorities seeking lenience.

Adding to the pain, it come hot on the heels of a hefty parking fine for the delivery driver.

"This fine comes less than a week after I was fined $362 for accidentally parking for five minutes in a clearway zone to deliver a parcel for Amazon Flex, which is legal for most of the day, but between 4:30-6:30pm is tow away," he said.

Social media users respond to Melbourne speeding fine

Since being posted on Tuesday, the photo has racked up more than 1200 views, with many seeming to be familiar with the unpopular speed camera at the intersection of Warrigal Road and Batesford Road.

"It's like a rite of passage to get done at that spot," one person said.

"Literally the only place I’ve ever got a speeding fine in my life," another commented. "And this was as a visitor, I’ve never even lived in Melbourne."

"Probably VicRoads' best source of income that intersection," a third person said.

While a lot of people thought the speed camera in a 40km/h area was outrageous, others recognised why it would be there in the first place.

"Holmesglen TAFE is right there," one local pointed out.

"Lots of students crossing Warrigal Road at that location for bus stop, restaurants, and there is also a McDonalds.

"I would consider it a high risk area."

According to the state's road safety camera data, the intersection at Warrigal Road is routinely among the most profitable speed cameras for Victorian authorities. It often appears in the top three in terms of fines issued, racking up more than 20,000 infringement notices a year.
