Men hit by flying bollard as police car crashes

Two men were hurt, one seriously, when they were struck by a flying bollard involved in a crash in Birmingham between a police car and several other vehicles.

The collision happened on Holyhead Road, close to its junction with Clarence Road in Handsworth, at about 18:30 BST on Sunday, West Midlands Police said.

Two pedestrians, aged in their 30s, were hurt when the bollard hit them. One was later taken to hospital with serious leg injuries and the other was not thought to have been seriously hurt.

A referral has been made by the force to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, as standard procedure.

One man received trauma care at the scene before being taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in the city Birmingham for further emergency care, West Midlands Ambulance Service said.

The second pedestrian sustained less serious injuries and was assessed by ambulance staff before being taken to Sandwell Hospital for further checks., a spokesperson said.
